Tips for Working at the Asbury Cafe®
We want your experience of working at the cafe to be enjoyable. This
information is provided making your experience better.
- Please arrive on time. Shift times are posted on the signup sheets and on the web signup. If you are the Pie Server on the first shift, please report to the Cafe by 8:15am to help unload pies.
- Dress comfortably and neatly; shorts are OK.
- Wear good shoes, as you will be standing for several hours.
- Do not bring valuable items with you. The Cafe does have a
bathroom which is only used by our people. You may store a few
personal items (coat, purse, etc.) under the front counter during
your shift.
- You are required by the health department to wear a hat (or
hairnet). We provide paper hats, but many people bring their own – a
baseball cap works great.
- Disposable gloves are provided food handling.
- The phone number for the Cafe is 265-4416 (Effective Sept 2009,
changes from year to year).
- For wrokers there is no charge for non-bottled drink items
(coffee, hot/cold tea, cocoa, tap water), grill orders are half-price,
and pie orders are full price. The first bottled drink is free after
that full price.
- This year (2009) the cost for adult admission to the fair grounds
(NOT PARKING) is $7 per day, ($5 for seniors), unless the Fair
advertises a special. Children under 5 are free. There is a family
pass for $20.Parking will cost $5 per vehicle this year.
We provide admission passes for the fair for workers. You can pick
up reusable passes at Asbury UMC (check signs on the doors to find
where to enter). A limited number of one-time passes are available
for persons with limited access to the church, such as coming to the fair from the west side.
You can sign out the passes from ...
- 7:15-8:15AM for first shift [9:00AM-2:00PM]
- 12:00-1:00PM for second shift [1:45-7:00PM]
- 5:00-6:00PM for third shift [6:45-11:00PM]
BE SURE TO TAKE THE PASSES TO THE CAFE AND
GIVE THEM TO YOUR DAY MANAGER!
- If you want to carpool, check the signup list to see those people
who will be working the shift with you, so that you might call each
other and plan to carpool. You might meet at a church and one of
you could go to Asbury and pick up the admission passes for the
group.
- Only right turns are allowed in and out of the Fairgrounds.
- Enter Gate 1 from Central, enter Gate 8 (to infield of the
racetrack) from Louisiana south of Lomas, or enter Gate 9 from Louisiana near Central.
- A Park and Ride Shuttle bus is available Sat and Sun only from
both the east side of town (NW corner of Coronado) and on the west
side (TBD). Cost is $2 each way (for all adults) and runs from
9:30AM to 10:30PM. The Rapid Ride system also has park and ride
lots at both ends of its route – at Central/Unser NW and at the
Uptown Transit Center, south of Coronado. It runs from 6AM-8PM
Monday-Saturday, every 10 minutes, 35 cents for seniors. It drops
you at Central and Louisiana. Call 311 for details/changes to bus
schedules.
- If you become ill and cannot work, please try to find someone
to replace you.
- If you have any questions please contact Paul Merritt at
821-5292 or any of the cafe contacts.
Have a good time, and thank you for volunteering!
