Rev. Joe Whitley, his wife, Alex, and daughter, Melinda are thrilled to soon be sharing in ministry with the gifted and loving people who are Asbury UMC. Joe is a native of Las Cruces and “cradle to grave” Methodist, who graduated from Pepperdine University, then Pepperdine School of Law. For 19 years, he was a civil trial attorney and also extensively involved in New Mexico and national politics. After clearly hearing God’s voice calling him into ministry, Joe graduated from Claremont School of Theology and began serving a United Methodist church in Los Angeles. He has also served churches in Las Cruces (including planting a new one there), and in Farwell, Texas. Joe truly enjoys fishing, camping, sports, water, and listening to live music. Most of all, Joe has a passionate love for, and commitment to, our Lord Jesus Christ and to all of God’s children and His creation.
Alex was an “Air Force Brat” who hails from Montgomery, Alabama; Okinawa, Japan; and Atlanta, Georgia. After attending school at Auburn University, she graduated from the New Orleans Montessori Teacher’s Academy and thereafter owned and directed her own Montessori Preschool for nearly 20 years in Las Cruces. For the last 5 years, Alex has taught several classes, and in the Head Start Program, in the Farwell Public Schools. For the last 3 years, she has also joyfully worked at Hamlin Memorial UMC as the church secretary. She loves to serve Christ and His church, cook, garden, read, play board games, meet new people, and explore new places.
Joe and Alex love, and are dedicated to, each other and their family. They have 2 children and 1 grandchild: Their son, Joseph, lives in Gilbert, Arizona with their grandson, William, and works for Flemings in Phoenix. Their daughter Melinda is 12 years old and will enter the 7th grade at Hoover Middle School this fall. Melinda loves Jesus, making new friends and spending time with them, playing flute, listening to music, experiencing all water activities, dancing, and playing basketball.
